Am I overloading my digi 001 inputs?
Okay stay with me here. I have a Mac G4 950 mhz with 768 mb ram, 120 GB external firewire hard drive, OS X (latest), Pro Tools LE 6.4, Digi 001, Apogee Mini-Me, Universal Audio M610, AT 4060 Tube Mic. These are the key players in my problem, which is this...
I am getting distortion mainly on vocals when the vocals are at their peak. The meter on the Apogee is not clipping, neither is the meter in Pro Tools. The reason I believe that this might be overloading the digi 001 is that when I turn on the compression on the Apogee, the distortion lessens but is still noticeable. My signal path is as follows... AT 4060 -> UA M610 -> Apogee -> Digi 001 via Spdif The problem started when I installed PT 6.4. Could the problem be the gain difference between the +12 in 6.4 and +6 in previous versiions? I have been thinking about upgrading to the Digi 002r, does the 002r have better hardware? If anyone has any other ideas I would appreciate it. I have tried all the troubleshooting tips, and just about everything else I can think of. If you need more info, I will be glad to give it. Thanks

Re: Am I overloading my digi 001 inputs?
It would do the same thing with an 002 or 002R, the S/PDIF inputs work the same as on the 001. I suspect you're overloading the input on the MiniMe.
Make sure the gain control on the MiniMe is clicked in the line position, full counter-clockwise. If the trimmers haven't been changed, that should set the sensitivity to +4 = -16dbFS. Then use the gain control on M610.

Re: Am I overloading my digi 001 inputs?
Thanks for replying.
The gain knobs are full counter clockwise in the line position. I know that the line level trim "screws" in front are supposed to be factory set, and I did buy this new from Gut Center, but they told me that they had this unit for a while, and I believe they might have messed with the positioning of the screws from the factory. I am not sure what the true factory setting should be. I can't find that information on their web site or the manual. I have also suspected that I could be overloading the apogee, but did not want to believe it to be so.

Re: Am I overloading my digi 001 inputs?
You can simply just feed signal/sound through your chain and turn them "trim screws" on the "mini me" one way, then the next, and find out.. If it was the case, then obviously just turn them so your getting a good level, but not distorting, and also are able to still "Push" your pre at a decent level....
Also check to make sure you don't have a plug in on the track that is overloading and causing this distortion... (but I imagine you already would have known that, or checked it,,,, but I am just double checkin' ) ...... Hope This Helps-- |
