Default why soundcards?

I am running an older amd t-bird, 1 gig, no-name, average run-of-the-mill computer for my pro-tools. Asides from a very recent connection to my home network it is not used for anything but music recording apps. As far as I know, the mobo's built in sound device is not even enabled. All the sounds come out the 001.
This may be a silly question, but why does everyone seem to need a soundcard? I don't even use the one I have.... its alllll digi.
Just curious.

Well take NI Battery for example. In order to get it to work, the audio is output from Battery via the soundcard. You then route that soundcard audio back to the DIGI 001s input with a cord.

MACs have direct connect, which eliminates the need for the cord.

Hope that helps.

Wait, are you saying I can rout all my sounds, like the windows media player and the internal CD player, through my AMIII card? How can I set this up? Pardon my ignorance.

Some people like to use VST based software or play games (or both)as well as use PT and while you can use the 001, 002 etc, for the standard sounds, until the ASIO drivers came out you needed a 3rd party soundcard to run VST apllications.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Yes, just install the wave-driver. CD-playing only through digital reading, but most cd-roms's and mobo's support it.

interesting. I jsut use the digi as my sound card. I actually like it this way and hope to never have to get a sound card from all the pains I hear people going through about it.
