Default A/D conversion

Is there a big difference in audio quality between aes/ebu and s/pdif? How are we 002 users supposed to get high quality digital audio in to pt other than adat. High res, 96k. Right now I'm useing adat ins(at 48k)for drum set. And analog for instruments and such. I want to get a fairly good stereo preamp (amek, ua, true, something under $2000). And an a/d box(ua 2192) for the s/pdif in. Is the signal degraded by useing the s/dif input? We don't get aes inputs.

Think about getting a 8 channel preamp with optical output. Then you can make use of the other 8 ports. Optical is digtital already, so no more conversions all the way into your session

I can get two channels of 96k audio into ProTools over the SPDIF on my 2192. I havent actually done a session in 96k with it yet though.

And as far as the 8 channels (Digimax, etc...) units, compare them to the UA610 throug hthe 2192 and see which one you think sounds better.

I'm already useing a digimax 96. read my first post. I'm trying to decide on another ad converter. something with better converters than my 002r. Also better preamps.

Spdif and AES/EBU are basically the same. AES/EBU is balanced and therefore capable of longer cable runs.

You're right, AES/EBU and SPDIF are "basically the same". However, more attention should be paid to the type of cable and connectors used. SPDIF is inherently more susceptible to jitter than AES/EBU...but this really doesn't matter if you pay attention to the cable, connectors, and cable lengths in your setup.

that's cool guys thanks for the replies. cable length is not a problem in my 12x24 home studio. All of my equipment is at the same end of the room. I just wanted to make the best choice.

Any choice you make will be better than the 002 converters. BTW.....you inferred that you had a Digimax......never stated it.
