I just looked at the specs for the new iMac and I don't think it has an audio in port. there is a headphone port and an Apple speakers jack port and there's a built-in mic somewhere.

The new G4s don't have built-in sound anymore. BUT...

Does sound manager recognize that 1/8" port as an input device? If it sees it as the 'built-in" then Pro Tools should, too.

There is the wicked cheap iMic for $40 by Griffin:
http://www.griffintechnology.com/pro...mic/index.html
and Edirol makes the UA-1A interface ($80 or so):

Then again, Protools has the dandy $500 Mbox.

yr pal,
DB

Hey, Thanks for the recommendations. To answer your question ,Yes. that 1/8 inch mini plug on the imac CAN be used to input audio, although from what i can gather it is not the best way to go about things, that is why i am looking for something cheap and cheerful in the meantime (just so i can use pro tools free and see what i think of it before maybe going for the Mbox).., the 2 devices you mention..would these *output* the sound of my roland DS50 monitors? this is what the soundcard does right? i notice that the Edirol is using RCA jacks, is it ok to send the audio from a synth into the edrirols RCA jacks?
Thanks again -[God bless the internet]

Hi

I'm using a G4 iMac with the Edirol UA-1A usb-audio interface. Sound Manager recognises it as an input device.

I've got the iMac hooked up to an amplifier and monitors and the sound quality is good.

The headphone socket is noisy (tried that before I got the Edirol) and the iMac speaker out is a non-standard socket - won't take a 3.5mm mini jack - so the only option for decent sound is USB.

When people talk about using PTF with 9.2.2 do they mean Classic (as in OSX) or OS9? (Is there a difference?)

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I've just switched to Macs and I haven't got my head round the Mac way of doing things yet.

Hi there,
Do you input any external instruments into the Edirol? I am looking for something like this..a simple little sound card just to use the Pro Tools Free CD i got sent. My main concern though is that i can capture the audio of my synth (yamaha motif) and my turntable (via a 2 channel mixer). Also, i need the soundcard to be the default audio output of my computer as i have no other speakers. I need to plug in Roland monitors tot he EDirol. Let me know if you would recommend the Edirol for these inputs. Thanks alot!

Hi

I don't know if the Edirol UA-1A will do everything you want - it has RCA ins and outs - so I use the outs to connect the iMac to my amplifier and the ins to connect my turntable to the imac when I'm recording vinyl.

Does your Yamaha have line outs or is it Digital or Midi?

Have a look at other Edirol interfaces - they do digital and midi USB interfaces as well. Check out the UA-20 or UA-3 .

Lots of people have had success with USB and PTF. The key is the device has to be able to use the SoundManager driver. This has been discussed in-depth here over the past year or so. Do a search in this forum on USB.

This is not an issue for me & my PM8500.
