I understand why these companies try to make it easy for consumers to keep their machines updated - and secure - but it can sure cause havoc for those of us relying on a stable system.
Actually I read somewhere that you also want to uncheck this

Blue arrow " Download new updates when available "

Seriously guys, are you so young that you have never heard of this: "NEVER EVER PUT PRODUCTION MACHINE TO PUBLIC INTERNET"
That's a bit like saying, "never drive a car, they can crash" when someone erroneously released a car-driving robot which jumped into the front seat and drove off a cliff. It's risk/reward and in my past 20 years of having internet on several production machines I've never once had a problem because of it. Conditions for danger exist absolutely everywhere but we can't lock ourselves in our rooms.

Interesting. That might have been part and parcel to the issue. But now that this has occurred I feel rather confident that Apple isn't going to allow this to happen again anytime soon.

I understand what you are saying. But still the production machines do not need this uncertainity. The day Apple pulls a plug on offline installers I need to adjust my thinking to "only keep your production machine online for the duration of planned update".

I have earned so much extra money helping guys out for some unplanned updates that have broken the system. And my bread and butter is on the nerdy side of keeping the production systems alive.

If you have budgeted for it however (and not meaning you @EricLambert but speaking as a passive form of english) then by all means leave your front door open while you drive to grocery store only to find out while you were gone someone took your savings from your safe, left unlocked of course.

To be clear, forced Sonoma updates have been occurring for people with every update option switched off. (And including someone who downgraded to Ventura afterwards, and then was force-updated again).

This is a major faux-pas by Apple, although they don't seem to have acknowledged it yet.

I got tired of losing data and having to reinstall everything from scratch years ago. I'm so paranoid now I have multiple backups of everything - Time Machine, external hard drives, DVD/BluRay and now online backups. It has saved my butt many times when data gets lost, accidentally deleted or corrupted. Always have a backup of your system!

Hmm I have all that crap turned off. Guess I'll wait with bated breath.

OTOH I feel better about my choice to use sleep and never shut my computer down....

OP: Clearly an APPLE problem. That doesn’t make Pro Tools “broken.”

1. Pro Tools is NOT broken in Sonoma. The known issues are very few and minor inconveniences only. (And recent Sonoma releases have resolved some of these known issues already)

2. AVID will release interim patch/hot fixes. They did one just this month - PT 2023.12.1
