Default Digi 001 vs. Motu 2408

I'm trying to put together a small studio and want to know which unit sounds better...and any other important bits of info anyone cares to dish up. I know this sounds unimportant but I'm having a hard time deciding and I'm tired of spending money on products that do half of what they're supposed to do. Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I have had both and I don't think your decision should be based on which unit sounds better (they both sound pretty good) but rather on what software you intend using, how many in/out channels you need and if you intend hooking adats or dtrs tape machines to it.
-the basic building block of he motu system is the PCI-324 PCi card. It has awesome in/out capabilities and the 2408 interface has extensive digital patching functions and good wordclock implementation *BUT* you will have to get additional software to take advantage of it !(in my experience it works great with motu DP but also with Cubase, I can't speak for logic audio))
- Digi001 is a really well thought out card/ interface and most of all has Protools LE bundled with it and this is GREAT software. Although I am now using a TDM system I have experimented recording 24 tracks in 24 bits with protools LE on a grey G3 300 (with a fast SCSI disk/board combination though)and it worked perfectly. The price to pay is that the system requirements of Digi001 are tough to meet(G3, lots of ram , fast disks)

To conclude I would dare to say (a simple opinion)
-Digi001 unbeatable value for money for a high quality home studio (don't forget that protools LE has many features of the TDM version). Check whether your favourite software interfaces correctly with it though.
-2408 best suited for working with a digital console (Yamaha 02r, mackie d8b etc)and frequent interfacing with ADAT and dtrs machines). Should you have to go from time to time to pro studios to download your recordings onto tape or digital HD systems, the 2408 might be safer because of it's wordclock capabilities
hope it helps !

Thanks for the help Mark. I just bought a 2408 based on a number of recommendations. Easy install, sounds good, easy to use. Its versatility is what sold me on getting it. (There's no proprietary bs!) I love Digi products but in my home studio I won't be using Protools for some time...unless that new single makes the charts!

I think DP3 (coming soon) is a valid alternative to 001 and even to TDM!!

A good friend here has worked with a G4/Motu2408/Logic Audio combination for five months now. He is so pleased, that instead of buying a TDM system for his home&mobile setup, he'll be going with the MOTU+Logic.

Logic does tend itself to his working style and he plans to live pipe synths and many other stuff through the MOTU, which is possible in Logic(and of course with the Digi001+PTle).

I almost bought a 2408 a couple of weeks ago. But I really want to get into PT because it's a standard today... so I HAD to go for the 001... as soon as I have some money, I'll get a 2408... for me it looks like the choice for who wants to make your studio grow in the future (not like 001)
