most professional hip hop producers aren't using software. they use MPC's, usually the MPC 3000 or the MPC 2000.

as weird as it sounds, the MPCs seem to put their own "schtank" on the sound... and that's the sound you're hearing all over the radio.

(and there's something about working from you ears and not your eyes -- i.e. no screen -- that's kind of cool.)

but, if you're going software then Reason all the way.

Reason..
The MPC is lossing ground fast.
MPC are used alot cause alot of producers know how to use them.
Once you get Reason set up with an external trigger device ( MPC, Midi keyboard, anything) youll soon forget about that MPC.
THe secret sound of an MPC is more the sounds put into it than the actuall MPC. There is a special flavor that develops when you use an MPC or other external samplers. I believe this is due 95% to the fact that you are not starring at a monitor. THe limitations of not being able SEE all the beats makes one think with theyre ears. SO.... STOP LOOKING AT THE MONITOR AND USE YOUR EARS.

Reason is used in my studio for almost every session.

Definitely start with the Re-Cycled loops in Reason, and other loops are free downloaded from the Propellerheads site.

i used to work on an mpc 60 back in the days...that machine was used a lot by hip hop producers in the days because of it's stability and the dirty 12 bit sound...now today this sound has been polished up to 16 or 24 bits so the difference isn't there anymore...soundwize i mean...if i remember right you could also add some shuffle to the groove in the mpc 60...can't realy remember because my mpc60 has been standing in the corner of my studio for over 7 years taking dust. but now i use a mac with logic, PTLE, Reason, Recycle and NO fruityloops is not available for mac. -)
