Assuming he's on Apple Siiicone it's not a waste of time, it's mandatory.

Default security settings need to be changed to allow installation.
Follow the link, it's quite clear.

"By default, your Mac uses the highest level of security, called Full Security. Before a legacy system extension (also known as a kernel extension or kext) can be installed on a Mac computer with Apple silicon, the security policy must be changed to Reduced Security...."

The same is also stated by Steinberg/Yamaha.

Hi,
i fixed it with Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver Installation Guide
for apple silicon:
1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Press and hold the power button until you see ""Loading startup options …"".
Your Mac will boot into Recovery mode.
3. Click Options (gear icon), then click Continue.
4. In macOS Recovery, select the volume you want to install the driver on and
click Next.
5. In macOS Recovery, choose your account and click Next.
Enter the password and click Continue.
6. In the top menu go to Utilities -> Startup Security Utility.
7. Select the system where you want to install the Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver.
If the disk is encrypted with FileVault, click Unlock, enter the password, and
then click Unlock."
8. Click Security Policy, choose Reduced Security and check the option to allow
user management of kernel extensions from identified developers.
9. Click OK.
Enter the password for your account and click OK.
10. Restart your Mac from Apple menu.

Now pro tools see my mixer 01v96i and everything work!
Thank you all for the support!

Great info kasper.

Haven't used my ancient dinosaur ASR10, and probably would never see the daylight of the rubber chicken software in this day and age. Although midi seems viable. Nonetheless that good good info down the road.
