As I read more I'm learning that these have dual graphics cards (interesting) and available solid state drives. And all the I5 and I7 processors have hyper-threading, where as with the Imac, only the top of the line extra cost (2199) processor has hyper-threading.

According to the website, these processors give up to 50% more processing power than the previous Macbook Pro.

Now that these are out, I'm wondering when we're going to see new Mac Pros. Now it might be a few months, darn it!

Yeah, I was wondering that myself. On the Imac, you have to go up to the $1999 model to get the I5, and another $200 for the I7. And only that I7 actually has hyper-threading, if you read closely.

On the Macbook pro, you can start at $1799 for the 15 inch I5, but it and the ones above it all have hyperthreading. The available solid state drive is also a nice option.

I think this puts them as a very nice option for running Protools if you decided to only get a laptop. Or a very good second computer for those using Vienna ensemble pro and similar products.

The specs on the Apple site state that these new dual core processors are 2.66 Ghz however my macbook pro has a 2.8Ghz Intel Core Duo. So mine is faster and is still has 2 cores. So technically wouldn't mine perform better?

Not exactly. Here is an excerpt from Apple:
Built-in Hyper-Threading allows two threads to run simultaneously on each core, so Mac OS X recognizes four virtual cores instead of just two. When you’re running multiple applications at once, the Core i5 and Core i7 processors spread tasks more evenly across a greater number of cores — so you can get more done, faster.

Looks like they are using the i5-520m and i5-540M which are dual-core with hyperthreading and turbo boost. So these should show as 4 cpu's in PT and with turbo boost can run up to 2.93 or 3.06 GHz respectively. Sounds like there should be some nice performance with these.

However it's the i7 that should be a beast. I'm not sure exactly which processor it is, but it should be a quad-core with the same tech as the i5. So 8 cpu's in PTLE. That would be nice.

Also, clock speed isn't directly related to a chip performing "faster". As noted, the Hyper Threading adds power, as well as direct CPU access to the RAM (no bridge) and a new type of chip architecture. Should be interesting to get Pro Tools loaded onto one of these, I'm looking to dump my 2006 MBP, this may be a good way to go.

No quad core - all parts are dual core 2.66GHz Intel Core i7 is the top cpu. The quads run at 1.6Ghz approx.

Here's Intels link

it very easy to stay up to date now Apple is on Intel
