Carbon and Mac M1 / Big Sur and other ?s
Hello all.
I’m fairly set on a Carbon for my new recording rig. I want to use it with a new MacBook Pro i9. I’ve been on the interface hunt and considered from prism titan to lynx Aurora to merging Anubis to UA Apollo. I’ve decided I don’t want to deal with a seperate mixer app like UA Apollo. So Carbon seems like the best thing for me . The last time I put together a pro tools rig, it was a Mac Pro/HDX system with a Burl mothership 24/32 for my bands studio. It works flawlessly and sounds wonderful. Carbon seems to be the perfect solution for my small portable rig. I’m a player for the most part and latency is very important to me as I record and overdub many real instruments. From my research these are my concerns with Carbon: -There seems to be a carbon fan noise issue in some cases. Some people mention it others are not bothered. I’m worried that my small space and things like schoeps mics in proximity might be a problem. -Fan noise from the Mac also seems to be a carbon issue even when it’s only just plugged in. Apparently an app called “turbo boost switcher” solves this. -there seems to be issues with delay compensation for hardware inserts. Apparently there is a software fix in the works from avid. -biggest concern in the latency performance when using the carbon with the core audio driver and other DAWS. Apparently it gets like 12ms latency in this context. The sub 1ms latency is only within pro tools. This is worrisome because I want to use it with ableton as well as pro tools . Maybe the “live link”‘software solves this?? Finally I’m wondering when the carbon will be M1 and or Big Sur compatible?? Having a hard time deciding on a Mac - MacBook vs Mac mini etc . I9 vs M1 etc Any advice / experience is greatly appreciated !! Last edited by darkwavo; 03-21-2021 at 10:15 PM. |

Re: Carbon and Mac M1 / Big Sur and other ?s
Is there any projected time that Carbon will be compatible with the M1 Macs?

I can't recall anyone on DUC so far trying these out. Avid won't tell you until they have done the work - later in 2021 or in 2022 is a reasonable guess. So you've either got to try it or wait for someone else to try it. Who knows - maybe they'll surprise us with a 2021.3 release which is fully Big Sur and M1 compliant. |

Re: Carbon and Mac M1 / Big Sur and other ?s
I'm using Carbon with M1
It crashes once in a while, but other than that it works well. There are some issues in delay compensation when using physical outputs for inserts, they're aware and working on that. Fan noise is there, I have a machine room with the old rig (HD 192's PC etc) so I'm used to complete silence. I hear the fans, but 99 % I'll probably keep Carbon in the room, it's really low (in my case) M1 mac mini is completely silent, never heard the fans kick in, and I stressed out the computer a bit. It's also really powerful, but I'm sure when it comes out of Rosetta emulation and gets native for M1 it'll be a monster. They have to make it work on M1 , all macs are going to be silicon after a while. No knowledge about using it with other software, sorry

Re: Carbon and Mac M1 / Big Sur and other ?s
Great news on the M1.
Have you tried with different plugins? Are they also working with M1? How bad is the fan noise ? Would you have a problem recording in the same room with a sensitive condenser mic? Thanks again |

But I agree with the Porsche comment, it has issues, but I would not buy an older intel model to regret it in 2 months. It does work well and the power of the M1 computer is pretty impressive. Just occasional loss of communication with the interface, more than a crash. The delay compensation issue is not related to the M1, it's a problem of Carbon itself and Avid said they're working on it.
