Default 10.5.5 combo update...

Do you need to download the update if you're running 10.5.6?

Nah. If you're already running 10.5.6 then you don't need 10.5.5 (I don't even think it's possible to revert back anyways). If you haven't already done so, I would download the 10.5.6 combo updater:

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...mboupdate.html

You should be okay in 10.5.6. Many people are fine including myself.

I'm thinking it would solve all of your issues, i don't think it's a software issue with Pro Tools, therefore a CS update isn't going to make it better. If it were a bug thousands would be on here showing the same issues, when in reality there are very few that just "can not" get it to work. If you were to fully Erase and Install the OS you would and then it still wasn't working, you would probably then be able to say you have some sort of hardware issue.

If you are not willing to reformat your system drive, then it might be time to stop complaining. Everyone wants their Pro Tools to just work, when there could 75 variables on your hard drive alone that are creating problems. I know it's not what you want to hear, but I will tell you having gone through at least 4 Erase and Installs, after doing it once, it isn't as intimidating and I can usually get my system back within a day or two. Yes it sucks, but with a good backup software like SuperDuper! it will be well worth your time.

use Super Duper! to back it up. The do a clean Erase and Instal. then only bring over the file and things you absolutely need. So you can go to the backup and restore all you emails from Apple Mail, or bring some mp3's back, drag your my documents back. But be cautious abut what you bring back over. Only install the programs you need, and one that are made to run on an Intel machine. It's a good way to take inventory of what is on your drive now. Keep the good throw out the bad. So you are using super duper to backup your system, but not restoring it after, only manually grabbing the stuff you need.
