Default Vacuum Synth not selectable in MIDI output selector

I've got this recurring problem where I set up a stereo aux channel and a midi channel, choose the Vacuum synth instrument on the aux channel and then when I go to select the synth from the midi output selector on the midi channel, the text is there showing the Vacuum synth but it is unselectable - clicking on it defaults to another instrument or if it's set to "none" it remains on none.

It's fine with every other instrument I've tried and also previous sessions using this instrument work. Any ideas?
