Default i\'m SOOOOO embarrassed to ask (playback/editing question)...

i've been working in PT for 8 years. know it like the back of my hand, i thought. commands are instinctual. anyway, i've got a problem with timeline playback and zooming edit selections... i've always zoomed in to edit a region while playback continues over another point in the timeline. now, however, whenever i zoom in at a point/selection in the timeline different from the point that's being played back, the zoom chases the playback point. no matter what pref i change (ex, edit insertion follows playback on/off), i can't get things back to my normal way. wtf am i doing wrong?!?!? i can't believe i have to ask this question... THX!!!
