mixing drums
I put a mic on the kick, snare, two overheads, and a room mic. Should the kick and snare be more upfront when mixing and just filter in a little of the overheads and room, or have the overheads and room up with just a little snare and kick?

Re: mixing drums
It depends quite a bit on the type of music. You have all the right sounds to work with, based on your mic placements.
A building block approach might start with the direct kick with snare slightly louder--then adding overheads followed by the room mic to balance cymbals and toms. Notice what the room mic does to the kick. And the overheads to the snare... That's the modern style. Old school, jazz, and John Bonham would start with the room mic sound and might add a bit of the other tracks for definition. EQ-wise...Maybe cut the low-lows out of the overheads. Cut the high-highs out of the kick mic. Just common sense and a light touch. You'll get better separation and a more defined mix if done right. A first round mix approach...Set your kick track to hit around -6 on your master fader. Set a monitor level you like then blend everything else in carefully and smoothly to your ear. Do that a few times in the same order, at least once with your eyes closed and you'll find the point where it sounds "real". Stop there. Group the drums and leave them that way for the first few mix tweaks. It works for me. MR
