Default RECORDING VOCALS!

Hi all,newbe Q here,basically like to know following: im using a joe meek vc3q and mic as preamp channel to record to pt via mbox 2 and like 2 know which input is best to use ;the DI or trs line insert and why so?Also is it really necessary to add compression when recording vox,acoutic guitar or can u add later if not sure re compression settings?thanks,dec
