Default ADAT ad/da Converter for 002/001

I own a digi002 and I'm looking for doubling my I/O with an ADAT converter. I'd like to spend less than $1000.I only see a few option from Alesis, Frontier Design and Lucid. I'm thinking about either the Alesis AI-3 or the Frontier Design Tango24. To me, the AI-3 looks cool because you can change the operating level (+4dBu, -10dBv) on the front panel, but I'm nervous about the sound quality from Alesis. The Tango24 might sound better, but you have to take the top panel off to change the operation level, but it is an option to change each channel indivually instead of universally like the AI-3. Another bitch of mine is that the Tango24 has a brick sized power supply while the AI-3's is internal. The Tango24 does have Word Clock I/O, but I don't really need that.

If anyone has any insite, please offer it. THANKS!

there are literally thousands of posts on the subject of ad/da here and elsewhere (gearslutz, prorec...) search through them for good info.

I think you'll find that the consensus will point you toward at least the RME box, the alesis and frontier products are just consumer level soundcards in a box, and possibly not as good as your 002. A level up are the Apogee and Lucid boxes, I saw an 8 CH lucid on ebay for 800 USD, it was the 44-48k version but you're probobly working at 44.1 or 48k anyway.

Check out the Frontier Design box. I forgot the name but I think it goes for around $700.

Also check out the Presonus Firestation. Although it is really a Firewire interface, I heard you can also use it as a stand alone A/D and D/A via lightpipe. I have a friend that is using one with his Adat Bridge and likes it.
