Default PT8, PT7 Crashings and freezings.. I FIXED IT!!!!

Update

Ok, Just to let you know..
I FIXED IT!!!! AND I LOVE PROTOOLS 8!!!

If any of you guys are having freezing and restarting issues, check your memory positions..

i switched the slots and BADA-BING!!! i just finished a 4 hour vocal/mix session and its perfect.. smooth fast and not a single crash! not even when i loaded expand by mistake while the track was playing!

Thanks to all your help, i can now go and write music!!

-------------------

Hey everyone..

Im now just so confused...

Many of you have been real helpfull, and i realy apreciate it.. so i just thought id say thanks! as you know i have been having issues with Protools 8. I have bought a whole new system, a wopping quad core, asus mobo, and 2 hard disks. But since the upgrade its been a nightmare..

I had a session tonight on PT8, and it was al going well untill it resets itself! i was editing some midi and then.. it everything went black... then booted up xp again!.. i thought this might happen.. so i just put it down to PT8..

At this point i didnt want to risk anoying my customer anymore.. so i booted up into the 2nd partition which has PT 7.1 on.. So we carried on with the mix, and about half hour in.. FREEZE!!... and then protools shuts down!! it didnt reset just shutdown protools to the desktop...
After this i looked in the events viewer and saw a red bubble with X in, and it said that dae.dll has encured a problem....
Booted up protools again and worked for another 2 hours without a crash....

Now im woried...

Let me explain my system:
I have XP Service pack 3 on both partitions all Updated, not ie7

Only Stock pluggins (apart from EZ drummer and DFH which are up to date)
Protools 8 CS2, Protools 7.1 on second partition
002R
XP service pack 3
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.33GHz 4MB-cache (1333FSB) Processor - Retail
Asus P5QL Pro Intel P43 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Black Dragon EVO ONE DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GE22GB1066C5DC)
Seagate baracudda 250 gig sata (system)
Seagate baracudda 500 gig sata (Audio)
1 cdrom
grfx nvidia 6 series (no extra power plug)
400W PSU (which i have tried 2)

ADS digi aproved firewire card

My Motherboard has the latest bios, i have tweaked xp to run just the services windows needs and disabled all unnessasary ports like Ethernet and wifi, no other software just clean XP installs and Protools.. i even reinstalled PT8 as advised in another thread..

I am now begining to think this is a hardware issue, sureley 2 completly seperate XP installations and 2 versions of protools is enough to prove this..
i swapped out the GRFX card for a Geforce 8600, and it crashed in the same way.. i also swapped the PSU for a different 400W one. (same power)

What do you think? there is a link to my sandra on this thred if you are interested...

http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread.php?t=241442

what should i try next, and what would you guys do?

Any help be be greatly apreciated..

Wanted to clarify something....are those two totally separate hard drives, or did you partition a single 750gb drive? A partitioned drive doesn't constitute a separate dedicated audio drive, and in fact will cause you TONS of problems. Your Sandra report shows only one hard drive is why I'm asking.

hey there, nope 2 seperate drives.... 1 x 250gig seagate, 1 x 500 gig segate.72000 rpm 8.9 ms seak time

it was also crashing in the same way when i just used 1 x 250 gig seagate, i was advised to buy the second drive....
the 250 gig drive is partitioned into 2 and the 500 is used for audio, both sata

thanks! :)

Could very well be a HW issue.
Please download and run Memtest 86+ first (it should run for a few hours with no errors).
What CPU cooler / case are you using? (I'm just qurious, but restarts could also be related to an overheating CPU)

Its stopped running..

----------------------------------------------
Ok update...

I took the second memory chip out... and ran the test again.. and this error came up

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/1432/95613635.jpg

Now it apears to still be running so ive left it running.

Ok, with only 1 chip in.. i still get errors.. the error confidence went upto 236.. i took that chip out.. and now i am running the 2nd chip on its own.. fingers crossed

--------------------------

update..

i swapped the chips and put the second chip in slot 1, and im getting this error..

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/4656/56052906.jpg

can both chips realy be problematic???

----------------

Ok had more errors with the second chip..

so i put in a 800mhz chip from my working pc downstares (rock solid)
and im getting this error!!!

Are the Ram sticks identical, bought at the same time and matched?

what peripherals are you using? a 400w psu is a little on the light side if you're running a lot of stuff. i had similiar problems with PT freezing last year , i upgraded to a 600w and havent had the problems since.

400W PSU could be enough depending on its efficiency. If its one of the more recent 80+% then it should be fine for the system you have now, especiall if you dont plan any gaming.
If its one of the older "noname" brands with lower than 75% efficiency or lowe than 26A it could very well be the problem.

What PSU is it? (make+model)
