Search under heading "Troubleshooting with Mac OS" for ATA drives within the last 20 or so days. There are several posts from users making internal ATA/IDE drives work on G4 machines with 5.01 software. You may need to query those users concerning the track counts they achieved. Sorry to be unable to give specific references.

Yes, Just migrated from NT TDM to Mac I use 2 internal ATA66 disks no problems apart from it takes about 5-10 seconds to start recording with 16 tracks. I am doing 64 track recording although they are not monster edits, 60% of the tracks go for the whole song. No Problems. These sessions came across from my NT scsi LVD drives to the IDE and are fine. I was told movies will be a problem although I do not do these.

I only ran into problems when useing a full
frame full motion movie running on the same drive (output with a miro card) Solution was just to move the movie to an old scsi drive I used for storage. Back to a full session no problems with an ata 66 7200!! |

I'd suck it up and get a 10K RPM Cheetah-- you'll notice an enormous difference in performance and reliabilty. You've just spent 20K on a protools system-- why not spend another $800 on a 36 GB drive that makes your investment that much more valueable?
When you have big sessions, you need powerful drives. you don't want to deal with 5 seconds of a floating hand if you don't have to. my 2 pennies. [This message has been edited by uno1234 (edited October 04, 2000).] |

"why not spend another $800 on a 36 GB drive that makes your investment that much more valueable?"
One reason is if you want to use the slot for something other than scsi. (plus for $800, you could have 100-150 gigs of IDE space) Have you A/B compared scsi with ide? What does the track count max out at with IDE? What reliability issues are there? I've heard of people getting 70-80+ tracks off of IDE drives, as long as you use at least 7200 rpm drives. From what I've seen, IDE isn't a step down in quality. Mike |

I cannot put up with slow computers and tapping hands. I've run my system off of IDE before, and found it to be slow and clunky. Sure, you can get plenty of tracks, with a medium edit density. But the user's ability to run the system quickly and efficiently is lost.
One example: your project has 30 tracks and a medium-heavy edit density. You hit play, and after 5 seconds of tapping, the song starts. Then, you realize you need to edit the beginning of the lead guitar solo. You hit stop, and zoom in 5+ levels to do the edit. Your system will slow to a crawl. It must access the hard drive during playback, and then again when you zoom in. An IDE drive cannot handle that expediently. And the client waits... If you're a power user, it is a necessity to invest in powerful SCSI drives. |
