Default DOS on a MAC

Steve-I realize this is not PT related, but I thought you might offer a suggestion:

I bought an IBM 9 gig internal drive to put in my Akai S5000 sampler. It is unformatted. The S5000 wants the drive to be DOS formatted. I'm up to my ears in Macs without a single DOS machine in sight. Is it possible to DOS format with a mac (it's a scsi drive)? I've checked Drive Setup 1.8.1 and HDT 3.0.2 with no luck. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your reply Steve. I'll look up DataViz and see what they offer. Another user suggested Formatter5 from Software Archetects, so there two possibilities. Anyway I'll post a solution if I find one.

Thanks again.

Rip,

I don't know of any formatting utility that will create DOS volumes from a Mac. We use a utility called MacOpener by a company called DataViz. It allows us to mount and create HFS volumes on Windows. It's possible they may have a utility that works the opposite way. Try looking them up on the web.

Hope that helps.

your sampler should be able to format your drive. i have no experience with the akai 5000 but i know the mpc-2000 will format hard drives. my emu does too.

My problem was that the brand new unformatted drive caused the S5000 to not boot. It would hang upon startup. The solution for me was to use 'MultiFormatter' which is a part of 'DOS Mounter' from Software Architects. The S5000 only recognizes the first 6.4 GB in three partitions, but it's better than nothing!
