Using the optical input on 001 - I have questions

I am using a Digi 001 and I am interested in recording more than 8 channels at once (shooting for 12). I know it is possible to do this using the optical input but I don't know how exactly.

I have the preamps that i would like to use but they do not have an optical output on them as some of the other ones that exist, like the presonus digimax and other 8-channel pres.

Is there a way to convert the line out signal from my preamps into the optical input of the soundcard?

If there is a way (some kind of converter) then what is a suggested brand and model?

If you want to keep your current preamps, then you just need a multi-channel A/D converter. Check out boxes from RME, Lucid and Apogee. If you want more detailed reviews, then search this forum as this topic has been covered many a time before.

If all you want to do is use your existing pres with outboard converters, check out the Alesis AI-3. 8 channels of line level input only to Lightpipe.
