Default Latency Blues

Dear PT friends...

I am running PT LE 6.4 with a Digi 001 on an Athlon 64 based machine.

The H/W Buffer's set at 256.

Recently, I've been feeling more conscious of the latency
while tracking (keys and bass).

It's milliseconds but I feel like it gets into my head...
especially when playing anything syncopated.

First...am I just imagining this?

Second...What are my options?

External mixer?

I remember someone a while ago posted a software solution here.
Something with setting up delays to 'mimic' no latency.

Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated!

Yes, either try decreasing the HW Buffer Size or consider getting a mixer to monitor through, so you won't have to deal with the latency issue at all (unless, of course, you're using software synths).

Thanks so much!

I'm not at my PT computer now, but as far as I remember,
the lowest H/W buffer setting is 256.

Is it possible to change it to 64?

Thanks!

If you have an external mixer and you are recording through a preamp that has an external output you can do this. I'm using a Mackie 1202 and a pre to do this.

1) Route Out 1-2 (the mains) from the 001 hardware to inputs on your external mixer.
2) Route the ext output from your preamp(s) to your mixer.
3) Use the headphone out of the external mixer.
3) While recording, "mute" in Digi the track(s) you are recording. If you don't mute you will
hear the delay coming back the mains output to the mixer.

Now you will have zero latency during recording. I made switch box so I could toggle the headphone output from the ext mixer and Digi. That is really nice.

Good luck...

the lowest you can set the buffer with a 001 system is 128 samples, which is very noticable if you are playing rhythm instruments.

have you tried low latency monitoring? if you don't have the gear described in the post above, it allows you to monitor tracks being recorded with no latency but the trade off is that sends and plug-ins do not work whilst a track is record enabled. it is only effective on outputs 1&2 and will be of no use if you are using software synths. also, if you have a master fader across 1&2, the record enabled track will not "pass through" the master fader.

if you require more information about low latency monitor mode and how to use it, please consult the reference guide provided with your pro tools software or online from the technical documents link at the top of this page.

Yea...my HW Buffer is set for 128.

Any way to set it to 64?

I still hear a little delay with 128, unfort.

So basically...

It's get an external monitor or switch to low latency mode.

I'll give it a try.

Thanks for all your thoughts!

Are you conscience of the latency during the actual overdub, or does it sound out of sync when you listen back to your tracks? Don't forget that PT 6.4 prints your recorded track 95 samples off than when you actually played it. Might has well go ahead and compensate for that too.
Edit: Sorry..I know this is true for the 002r, but not sure about the 001.
