Default instrument track vs audio track

I was having a problem with iDrum overpowering my maximum setting of the latency compensation engine pushing the timing out of whack.

I originally had the plugin on an instrumental track.

When I switched the plugin to an audio track instead the issue vanished.

Is there an explanation for this?

I am on a 64 bit PC with Windows 7 running Pro Tools Native.
