Default Pro Tools 12 and D Command?

I am curious if anyone has tried to use a DCommand with any success in PT 12?

On the official support compatibility page, it shows the DCommand ES with 2 fader modules as compatible. We have an old grey DCommand with 2 fader modules (not the ES). From what I can see, the non-ES version is not listed on the page anywhere, even in the "unsupported" or "incompatible" sections.

It works perfectly and will for a long time I suspect.

Will D-Command, with or without ES, work with regular non-HD Pro Tools 12? If not, what is the least expensive path to impliment HD on my non-HD Pro Tools rig

Nope. Your options is to buy a HD9 or newer license either used or new or step into a subscription of PT Ultimate paid monthly or yearly. You need a HD/Ultimate license for it to work in any case.
