Smile Creating a drum track 101

Hi, i am leading a discussion this Wednesday for the San Diego SOngwriters MeetUp. DIscuss topic is: How to Create a good Drum Track for your Song. Most of the members are not very savvy about recording, so simplicity is a bonus.

A couple questions, any advice would be appreciated.

When to use a ready made loop, versus create your own beat from scratch.
What makes a good drum track?
How to ensure the drum beat works with the instruments.
When to create the drum track versus the other instruments.
How to use fills.
How to vary the track to accentuate the verse/chorus/bridge without losing the groove.
Best and easiest-to-use options out there.
Examples of good and bad drum tracks.
Any other thoughts?

Let me know what you think.

Adios and thanks in advance,
cliff
