M2 Pro scores 1952 on Geekbench5 singlecore whereas M1 Max scores 1727. Difference of 225 is +13% so what did you expect?

Being as the M2 chip is still 5nm, does this mean it is just an M1 with higher clock speed? If so, can we expect fan noise in the Mini, as the M2 runs hotter?

Who knows. But M1 mini with full throttle is dead silent here. And my M2 air does not even have a fan.

As far as I know, all M2's run at the same clock speed as M1s. The main differences are the number of cores, and the speed of memory addressing, and the size of memory they can use. Hence the very small difference in single-core performance between all iterations of M1/M2, and also my lack of excitement over these new mac models. My 2020 M1 has most of what I need, and I know that thousands of dollars for an upgrade just doesn't make sense. Now, the M3 by the end of the year, on the other hand… I'll be saving up…

Who remembers this supercomputer cpu called G5 from +20 year ago that was manufactured with 130nm process? Now we are going from 5 to 3... for god's sake, visible light is 380 to 700 nanometers. We need computers to build computers.

M2 = 3.48 Ghz
M1 = 3.2 Ghz

Different clock speeds

Who thinks clock speed is important? Intel reached 3.0GHz in 2002 but clock speed has basically remained stagnant ever since. Poor benchmark for performance.

All things held constant, clock speed is important. It will likely increase with the 3 nm chips.

The M2 chips seem a marginal boost over M1 but at least there is an improvement.

Can I hold out until the M3 I wonder?

Clock speed is not irrelevant. However singlecore performance boost of 13% and clock speed increase of 8% says something else is more important.
