Default 002r with Black Lion microclock

Has anyone had chance to test this mod? With no BNC on the 002r
is there another path to use this clock with an 002r?

Thanks

I own the Microclock, and it is well worth the money. I'm running 003, and it is an easy hook up. BNC. On the 002, not so easy. The guys at BLA told me that you can't hook the microclock up to it.

The only way to get the BLA word clock is to have them do the mods on the 002R. From discussions with them, they say that there isn't much difference in the clock they put in the 002 mod and the outboard Microclock

With the 002 you would have to use the Sparrow instead of the Micro Clock, but look at this from a more realistic point of view:
Micro Clock = $425
Sparrow = $650
BLA HD Package Mod = $575
BLA Tweakhead Package Mod = $795 (available for rack units only)

Kinda makes both the Micro Clock or Sparrow a bad investment for 002 or 003 owners compared to getting the HD Package Mod.

Thanks to both of you for your reply. AN OUTSIDE THOUGHT: I have a Ahpex 230 Mater Voice Channel which has both
in and out BNC connections. The Aphex goes to the 002r via S/PDIF. If the Black Lion clock was to clock the Aphex with the Aphex via S/PDIF to the 002r..... could this clock be utilized? Just an outside thought. Any comments appreciated.

Matt from BLA had this to say about Re-clocking using SPDIF in the 002. This is from Gearslutz.

Question:

May I go so far as to ask for your opinion on External Clocking using ADAT directly compared to your above thoughts on S/PDIF External Clocking?

Matt at BLA:

Well, two things come to mind: The first is that, with the 002, its SPDIF/ADAT phase detection circuit SUCKS. It's the exact same circuit that the MOTU units use for their master clock. The sad fact is that the 002 gives a user absolutely no decent method for reclocking. NONE. Second, the internal clock we use is just as good as any high end clock on the market...

Care to elaborate?

I used a 002R with a Rosetta 800, clocked via ADAT before I got the TWeak Head Mod. The mod is at least on par with the Rosetta setup.

He means that Matt's statement is a load of crap.
Even your own statement says such.
You say that the Rosetta setup was good and the BLA mod is on the same par but by Matt's statement the Rosetta setup would be a waste because the 002/002R offer no decent means of reclocking through the SPDIF/ADAT.

Making statements like this never helpful to your business.

Yes thank you A2DD2A for taking the time to explain this.
Whether or not the BL mods are good, I haven't heard one. But the statements from them are indeed a load of cow dung.
Thus..... maybe their mods are crap too!

I have used the Rosetta 800 and it was superiorly great. $2500 worth.
I'd be willing to bet it's much better than a $500-750 BL mod.

I'm not here trolling for business. I'm in no way affiliated with Black Lion, or any other audio company. I'm a freelance musician, and I'm only trying to help, and don't need to be lectured about business savvy.

Matt's statements actually make sense to me. If the phase detection circuit on the 002R is less than stellar, but it's passing a high-quality clock signal (which the Rosetta possesses), then the cumulative effect of these two factors can still mean good quality.

If the wordclock from the BLA mod is better than the stock one, and it's connected well (hardwired to the ADDA within the 002R), then the cumulative effect is good quality.

Now, if one were to clock from the Rosetta through an X-HD card to an HD rig, then you'll truly hear what the unit can do.

All Matt is saying is that clocking the 002R from an external source has its limitations. But improving the clock WITHIN the 002R is another animal.
