What RME interface are you trying to connect? I've had great success with my 002R and FireFace 800. Using the ADAT connection for audio, and to re-clock the 002R to my FF800. Setting the clock source of the Digi to slave viz lightpipe. As for the 003, as you know it's equipped with wordclock. So if the RME you're using is equipped with wordclock use that to sync, and send the audio via lightpipe or SPDIF if needed.
