Default Quicksilver 733 users, unite!

Or just tell me how well PT is working for you under OS X...

Yes, I've read and followed the troubleshooting tips. Yes, I realize that my machine has no L3 cache (Doh!).
Yes, I know that raslin's fake.

I'm curious as to how well PT is working for other users of the 733. Are you constantly getting buffer underrun errors? I am, especially with Rewire/Reason 2.5.
Are you experiencing kernel panics occasionally? Me too...

I'm just wondering if perhaps my machine is a little too slow under OS X to really push it like I do under OS 9/5.2.1, or should I still be looking elsewhere for the solution.

I really want to make the jump (full time) to OS X (so many of you seem to have been able to do it), but stability is a major issue.

I know, I know - broken record...

-cheers

The general consensus I get is that you will get less performance moving to 0S X.

I have a 733 with 640 Ram. If you really like the features that the PT 6.* provides prepare to live with less track counts or consider getting the fastest G4 you can find (As G5 will not run with an 001 due to the different voltage levels on the PCI slot). Me, I am going to stay put with what I got for now. More toys does not always = better music

Good call, B. McGibney. If I were you I'd stick w/ PT 5/OS 9, also.

I've got the QS 733, and I decided to stay with OS 9.2.1, and PTLE 5.1. I read a lot of horror stories concerning the change to 6.0, and just didn't want those headaches. You have to ask yourself what you're gaining by upgrading your software. For my time/money/trouble 6.0 is just not that big of a step up. If you're running fine in OS 9.x.x, you'd be better off just staying there.

I've got a 733 and I've been using PT6/OSX for awhile now with virtually no problems. Just upgraded to Panther too and so far all is running well. I did upgrade my RAM to 1.2 GB and that did make a big difference in terms of speed.

That being said I am not running Rewire/Reason which seems to be causing a lot of people problems.

There are new features in PT6 that made it worthwhile for me (the groove templates, selectability over multiple tracks and commands focus keys especially), and the MIDI seems tighter overall. More so in Panther. Also, I noticed the overall 'sound' was better in PT6, to my ear anyway, even on sessions I had done in PT5. Others seemed to notice this as well.

Again I'm not doing heavy sessions with large track counts so your experience may be different. I'd say install the updates on a separate partition and see how it works out with the way you work. If there are too many problems you can just wipe it out. Do a clean install though and pay attention to all of the "read me" docs. since that's where many people's problems seem to originate. A lot of the problems and pitfalls are known, so just pay attention to the fixes and workarounds.

I am a new user to PTLE and the Mac. I have an 002 running PT 6.1.2 on a Mac Quicksilver 733 with 512 Ram on OSX 10.2.8. This is an interesting thread because I have been wondering what my setup can do in terms of track count. Your insight is appreciated.

Thanks

I have the QS733 - moved to PT6 (for Reason integration) and found it real slow - almost unusable. I upgraded to 1ghz GigaDesign, and it is like night and day for me. It feels so much more than the numbers would imply - particularly because of backside cache issue. The timing in Reason is rock solid in 6 and very easy to use.

It's hard for me to do a 1 to 1 comparison because I switched from DP/OS9 to PT/OSX, but the cpu upgrade seemed to negate any hit that OSX gave - if that makes any sense. The Gigadesign is well worth the money in my opinion - particularly for our model of computer.

Hope that helps,

- Proxy

I too am using a 733. I have to say that I love 6 and Panther, but I am struggling with speed using only a few plugs. I am personally going to jump on the upgrade bandwagon and pickup a new processor. I would rather spend a few hundred on the upgrage then go back to 9/5.2.1. I didn't realize how foolish the 9 layout was until jumping to Panther. If I were you, make the switch. OS 9 will be left in the dust. Many software companies have announced that there will be no more support in the future. Don't be left behind.....

People seem to be praising Panther for stability, but I'm wondering if it is even more sluggish than Jaguar. I already know they're both slower than 9, but like you, I think it's worth it for the features. Did you find that Panther allowed for even less processing/performance than Jaguar?

Proxy,
Have you noticed or experienced any compatibilty issues or quirkiness with your Giga-deisgns cpu upgrade that affects other applications. I've read that some cpu upgrades won't allow the computer to go into sleep mode anymore.

Thanks for your input.
