More simply than that, "Bussing" means to create a secondary signal path Pre or Post fader to another channel, auxillery, external device or group. A bussed signal never needs to return back to the origination point to complete the signal path. In other words, I can use a buss to route signal out of a Pro Tools "Physical Output"(I/O) to another recorder. This is a common practice for mobile recording engineers as a "safty back up".

An insert must always return back to the channel it originated from because it interupts (or is "Inserted" in...) the signal path back to the bussing system which includes the Main Left and Right output.

You probably already knew this but it may clarify the issue for those who are just learning.

Peace

Eric

Bussing - from the word 'busbar'.. basically to send multiple sources to a single destination via a bus (a piece of wire which extends the length of the console) with a summing amp followed by a booster amp (in the analog realm). Obviously there are multitudes of applications.. from effects sends, to sub-mixing to cue sends.. the beauty of Pro Tools is that it's flexible and you can achieve all of these.

One more thing on the subject of "Bussing". An insert can be used as a buss by using the send protion of the insert (In Pro Tools that would be the "O" half of "I/O" sent to a "Physical Output"). The result would be that you can send the signal anywhere but the "Originating" channel would have no output. we use part of this technique at our Church to "Preamp" our signal back to the Aviom Stage Monitor "In Ear" system. We take the insert Post Fader and "Half Patched" with TS 1/4" ("half patched" means the jack is pushed in 1/2 way on a TRS female jack)which "shorts" the signal back to the insert "Return" and still allows us to "Buss" the original signal to the "Sub Groups" and assign the "sub grougs" to Main Left and Right. It's a bit convoluted but it works. "If it sounds good, it IS GOOD!" RIGHT?!?

Excuse me... The insert is taken PRE FADER! Quite a difference!

Guys,

Walters is a well-known troll from other boards in the pro audio community; just a warning.
