Default ADAT as ad/da

Hi

Does anyone know whether or not it is possible to use an Adat machine as both a/d and d/a at the same time? If so, how do I configure it to do so?

Any feedback or info regarding this subject will be greatly appreciated.

Espen

Wanted to *BUMP* this cause I was wondering about it , slightly differently, like has anyone used an old ADAT as their A/D interface to take advantage of the ADAT optical connect? Would that be a cheapo way to use the 8 ADAT ports ???

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Unfortunately you can't, basically the options you have available to you with an ADAT are:

A/D - ADAT in normal mode (digital input de-selected). Whatever is coming in on the analog inputs whether they are set to all input mode or rec armed in auto input mode is converted and sent to both the analog outputs and the lightpipe output.

D/A - ADAT in 'digital input' mode, anything coming in on the lightpipe input is converted and sent to the ADAT analog outputs, provided you are in all input mode or the tracks are rec armed.

Switching to digital input mode disconnects the analog inputs from the A/D conversion stage, this is the gotcha.

So you can use the ADAT for 8 more inputs while tracking (provided you monitor from PT on outputs 1-8 or the SPDIF). During mixdown you can use the ADAT for 8 more outputs (in digital input mode).

Be careful of your clocking particlarly with blackface ADATs without a BRC the ADAT must be clock master during A/D, and clock slave during D/A. From the XT's onwards you can independently set the clock source.

Cheers,
Marcus

Thanks for your help! Too bad it can't be done though. Guess I will have to use two Adats to achieve what I want...

Also the converters on ADATS are average at best. If you want to have an extra 8 ins via ADAT go for an Octopre from focusrite and you will also get 8 decent mic pres too!
