Default ext HD recommendation?

I have old equip, PM 9500, OS 7.61,AM3 card, PT3.4. Was hoping someone can provide guidance regarding an external HD that'll work with this ancient equipment...

It depends on how many tracks you want/can do. If you plan on using the built in scsi, just get a Seagate barracudda 7200 rpm narrow drive. I've used both 2 and 4 gig versions and had very good success.

Some options

Here are some options if you don't want to use an old 50 pin drive and if you intend to use the existing SCSI connector on the Mac. Shop on EBAY. You should be able to buy a new "Barracuda" (18G~$200) or "Cheetah" (18G~$300) with 80 pin SCA or 68 pin. A "SCSI Case" will be around $20 on EBAY.

You have two main options, assuming the case you buy is 50 pin Centronics(most common for Single drive cases).

Option 1). Depending on the drive you buy, get a 68p or SCA drive adapter (with the high bits terminated), which will allow your drive to connect to the cases internal cable.

Options 2). Replace the wiring with LVD ribbon cable with 68HD connectors in the case you buy. You will need an external adapter or cable that adapts from your computers SCSI connector to HD68 with the high bits terminated.
You will also need an internal SCA to HD68 adapted, if you buy a SCA drive. Note that some of these adapters are terminated and require the resistor SIPs to be removed to work properly.

Here are some links for adapters, internal cables etc:

Be sure to preperly terminate the end of the SCSI chain.

I'm sure this isn't the best solution, but I've got a 9600/300. I got an ext. SCSI 9GB drive (50pin) from Ebay for $115. Hooked it to the build in scsi port. I'm running PT24 TDM and I get 24 tracks at 24bit with FX and automation with no problems. Now I'm sure it's not the fastest drive, but it sure works fine for me. No problems at all. And it was cheap..........
