Default Changing my i5 to a i7 with no other changes.

Changing my i5 to a i7 with no other changes. Do you think windows 10 or PT 12.7.1 will need to be installed again?

Thanks
Fvf

Not personally, but I'm not a professional computer guy either.

I changed my mobo and CPU in Jan after I had installed it with an entirely different set up

It didn't go well and it was easier for me to just redo it....but just a CPU sounds a lot easier.

Thanks. I believe your right worst case would be the need to reactivate windows 10. I just didn't know what PT would think.

Generally changing out a cpu will not require a reinstall of Windows. Motherboard swaps are a different story, and differs based on the version of Windows. I swapped out a FX 6300 for a Phenom II between my ProTools rig and my everyday computer, and the ProTools rig didn't skip a beat. On my newer Windows 8.1 Pro rig, I got a message something like "CPU has changed..., and I said no to whatever it was asking" and I have not seen that message again.

Are you sure your motherboard will support the i7? Same generation of processors?

Yes what MJ asked AND. I still don't know what you mean when you're asking about knobs.

I think the reference to knobs is just his signature. If you don't know whether the i7 is compatible, post the specific motherboard model (including revision # if possible) and your i7 model and I can research it. You may need a BIOS update also.

Thank you for the offer but I know it is the 1156 cpu and the MB version is good and bios is right. Only wish this mb would support zeon but I wanted to max it out now that those i7 have come down in price on the used market.

Do you know what all those knobs do.

Looks like you are good to go then. Beginning with Windows 10, your product key is stored on the BIOS chip, and Microsoft will recognize the hardware change (presuming you use your Microsoft account to log into Windows), but since you are using the same motherboard, you should not have any issues.
