Default Presonus Digimax and Digi001

Does anyone use a Presonus Digimax mic preamp (8) with the Digi001? How does it work? Why would recommend this over a digital mixer for less money?

any other thoughts on its use? thanx.. tom

The Digimax mic preamps sound great and it locks up nicely with the 001. Do you want the "control" of faders? This is the question to ask yourself. If not then save the money!

Vega: If I understand your response, you are saying that if I don't need faders, no need to buy an external mixer...?? But a mixer is actually cheaper than the Digimax... so how would that be saving money... or am I missing something??

Do you actually have a digimax??
thanx..

Tom,
I just bought the Digimax about a month and a half ago. I love it so much. The best feature is that it has eight XLR imputs, not 1/4 in. Each channel has a gain, pad, enhance, separate phantom power, and a LIMITER!! Channels one and two also have Hi-z imputs. You can select from three different sample rates (32, 44.1, 48) or sync to an external device. As far as setup, all I did was made the adat connection, and set sync mode in pro tools to optical, and everything was running great. The digimax was a great way to get anothe eight imputs into pro tools. If you have the money, and are willing to spend it, I'd say, go for it, you will be happy!

Tom,

I'm a product "tester" for a major music retailer. The digimax is the real deal! In regards to a digital mixer, you get what you pay for. "Inexpensive" digital mixers usually have sub-par converters. And well don't get me started on the mic pre's.

Few digital mixers can compare to the quality of a stand alone digimax-In terms of conversion and pre. But, if you want faders and are willing to sacrifice quality go with a cheap digital mixer. Get the best of both with a DA-7 or D8B. (its just money)

Digimax vs DigimaxLT

Which one?

Need a step above Mackie 1604 VLZ for drum tracks.....

Should I also be looking at the Focusrite Octopre and Oram Octasonic 8 ?

We've been using the digimax for almost a year, and we get great results from it. The limiters can be a lifesaver (or huge time-saver, depending on how you look at it). The tone of it's pres are very crisp and full. Both downloads on our site had the digimax used, but only "Drunken Sailor" was all digimax (and a live show, too).

I have an Octopre with the digital output option. I really like it. Sounds great, easy to use, has a future with 16/20/24 bit and 44.1/48/88.2/96 KHz digital output. Also has 8 analog inputs and outputs. Built in analog inputs are 8 XLR. In addition, chanels 1 and 2 also have 1/4" for instrument. I use the ADAT out to the 001. It is also set up to use DB25 cables for analog input and output. I chose to make the other end of the DB25 snakes 1/4" balanced to use with a patch bay but you can have any other connector you want on the other end of the snakes.

Did I mention it sounds good too.

Each channel has 48V phantom power, gain control knob, front selector for line of mic, high shelf filter, O/L indicator, signal indicator, compressor adjustment knob, compressor active indicator, limiter active indicator.

Did I mention it sounds good too.

With the options I have, you can hook up a word clock, 8 channels of AES/EBU via DB9 connector, and ADAT at 48K Hz or 96K Hz (using the 2 ADAT connections with SMUX).

Did I mention it sounds good too.

I have had it for about 6 weeks and am very pleased with it. I will say, they are not that easy to come by.

Let me know if you have any other questions about the Octopre.

Thanks,
Greg
