Default stereo panning

i've got an imac, a mackie 1202 and Pro tools Free. i'm coming directly out of my turntable into channels 11/12. from there the signal comes out of the tape out (RCA) and into my imacs minijack.

i've created two tracks. should their pan pots be left alone at center or panned extreme left and right?

thanx... fitz

put them wherever they sound the best... i have my drums submixed into a stereo aux track and have them panned not center or extreme, at about <30> or so... makes for a bit wider center in my pan spectrum

are you talking pan on the external mixer? if you are, you might want them hard left and right

that's correct...

if you want to hear the stereo image in the same width as it is recorded on the vinyl, then set your pans to full left and right.

I just noticed you have your table plugged directly into the mixer.

Does the low-end seem to be lacking?

yes, i noticed there was almost no lows, so i boosted both the lows and the mids a little, but it still is lacking. why?

To correct the problem with lost low-end from vinyl you should use either:

a) a mixer with phono-inputs (DJ-mixer)

b) an amplifier with phono-inputs, and tape-output.

c) seperate RIAA-filters to convert the signal from the turntables to a normal linelevel signal...(costs about $20)

This is because vinyl records are mastered with diminished bass response to make the stylus track properly. It is compensated for by the phono preamp. Most mixer EQ's don't have the capability of boosting the correct frequencies.
