Why doesnt someone just make a D/A box, with a volume control , and 12 outputs , that can playback Dolby Atmos stuff.......why do we need to go thru all this crap....I dont need 48 inputs and AD converters etc etc.....just gimme a box for 1000 bux that can playback stuff, into my home 7.1.4 monitor seup...

Re: 12 output Dolby playback box
Like it or not, the best option right now is an Apple TV and a Marantz or Emotiva preamp processor. The Marantz is exactly what you're talking about, DA box with a big volume knob and (12) outputs.

Re: 12 output Dolby playback box
I feel your pain; crazy that even if you've got a full atmos setup with monitor controller and all the outputs, there's *still* no easy way to decode an atmos stream into it without buying a consumer preamp with atmos decoding and going through that *back* into your monitor setup - what's really needed is a Mac-based software decoder from Dolby. There's all these great atmos mix stages out there and most of them have no way to actually listen to a commercial stream.

Re: 12 output Dolby playback box
+1 for Rich!
In case the OP doesn't already know, you can ask Dolby for access to the Dolby Reference Player which plays many consumer formats (DD+JOC MP4s, for example) on the Mac in any format and any consumer simulation from stereo to 9.1.6. Very useful app. You can hear the effect of data compression. But you do have to have access to the MP4s, DRP won't decode a stream from Apple Music or HBO.

Re: 12 output Dolby playback box
This is all intentional.
Studios/Dolby don't want the ability to record clean decoded digital out given to consumers. It's "copy protection." We've been here before, honestly (reason why you had to jump through a lot of hoops to get Dolby Digital 5.1 out as a decoded digital out -- they wanted to make sure it only went analogue out as a copy protection scheme)
