Default Record To Disk and Dither

Hey everyone, just trying to get some clarity on something. Whenever I'm done with a mix I always Record To Disk instead of using the Bounce To Disk option. Generally this is done with all tracks going to a 2 bus then the 2 bus going to a stereo audio track. I then select the audio file and tell it to export at 16 bits.

Generally I put a dither plugin set at 16 bits with noise shaping as the last plugin on the aux track however its come to my attention that Pro Tools by default dithers the file when exporting at a lower resolution? If this is true then am I essentially dithering twice? Is there any way in Pro Tools 10 to set that default dither to something other than the Avid/Digidesign Dither?

thanks

Yes.

No. To reduce the word size without dithering, you either have to bounce it out or export 24-bit and use a different program to truncate the already dithered file.

What Jimmy said. If you prefer bouncing to a track, don't dither at that point. When you export the file and choose 16 bit, Pro Tools will apply dither for you. Personally, I prefer to control things my self. Whether I bounce to disk, or to a track, I stay at the session's sample rate and bit depth. I send the final stereo audio to Wavelab and do any "finalization" there. Reasons: Wavelab(and several other programs) do the work faster and give me more control. And, I will have the original mix version, in case I need to change the mastering, send it out to mastering. I guess my point is, when I mix, i am shooting for the best mix, period. I leave any "mastering" duties to be done separately. Just a preference

What he said

There are some great programs to do this in.. WaveLab is a good one, but if you want something that cost less and pretty much does the same thing.. you should check out DSP-Quattro- http://www.dsp-quattro.com/dspquattr...P-Quattro.html

I believe it goes for $99 at the moment and supports AU and VST plugs-ins.

This gives you the ability to do all the tweaking/mastering and setting up of a redbook cd or mp3's with ease.

Hope this helps
