Default HD worth the upgrade from Mix plus

I wanted to get opinions to upgrade or not. Right now I am using a Mix plus with 2 extra farm cards and a Rosetta for tracking. Usually I am only recording 2 tracks at a time. I am very happy with the sound. For pre's I have a drawmer 1969 and great rivers preamp. I use mostly waves plug ins. Is 6000.00 worth it for what Ill get? Thanks for any feedback. Robert Michaels

if it was "only" 6E3 here in Brazil, I would do that!
Will you have to change your MAC and SCSI card too?
Nice week

Is it worth the upgrade? Well, take a listen to some of your favorite records recently. I'd say 7 of 10 records were done using Pro Tools 24/44.1k. Maybe an Apogee AD8000 was in the chain along with a Neve 1073/1081 mic pre and a LA-2A/3A compressor. Maybe some of the mic's were u47's and m149's. Maybe the outputs of your Pro Tools interfaces were routed through an SSL or Neve console.

The best records start with a great song....end of story. The record only sounds as good as the source of the music. If you were to record a band like Sting, and then had your friends play with exactly the same set up, it will not translate to "tape" the same way.

I was lucky enough to work with one of your (USA) top producer(s) and mixer(s) (whom also makes great eq's and comp's), and received the nicest compliment from both about my work as an engineer...and I was using Pro Tools 24/44.1k. (mixplus)

Do you need to upgrade? No. Are your clients demanding it?...(if yes)then Yes. Pro Tools is the best platform on the market....it's hard to do records without it.

Does that help at all, or did I just pat myself on the back.

D.T.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Do you want to stay current? Do you need more DSP? Do you need more tracks? Do you want to be able to handle higher sampling rates? Will your clients be sending you stuff at 88.2khz or higher? Could you use the more robust PCI handling capabilities of HD (i.e. fewer, or no -6042 errors)?

Do you want the new, improved mix bus of the HD system (48bit with the next software release)?

Figure that the life cycle of HD will be about 3-4 years. Somewhere during that period, new software releases for the older hardware will cease. There's an extra financial incentive to upgrade to HD by June 30, so now's the best time financially to do it.

If you probably will do it at some point, I figure it's better to do it sooner that later so that you get the maximum advantage from your investment. I wouldn't want to be the person that finally upgraded to a Mix+ system a few months before HD was released.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">OTOH, after June 30, with $2000 more, you will also get the "up-to-$muchos worth" plug-in bundle.

Ah, you feel my pain. Just purchased a large Mix (Core, 3 Mix farms, 2 DSP farms, 3 888/24, USD, and ADAT Bridge) in June and just got it installed around October. Hard to justify another $8,000 right now to upgrade to a system with similar capabilities. Guess I'll wait and see what the demand is. At this point another 2 grand probably won't break me if I do end up getting HD after June 30.
