Default Working at 48 kHz, transferring to 1/4" tape @ 15 i/s then rec to 44.1?

In other words:
Would you suggest to work at 48 kHz instead of 44.1 and then recording the mix to 1/4 inch tape (i have a Revox PR99 at 15 inch/sec)and then re-recording the tape to pro tools (Apogee converters)at 44.1 to master?

If not, would you do that with a top Studer 1" master recorder?

Thanks

yes. I do it all the time.
I record into PT at 48k-mix-dump onto Studer 1"-then back into PT at 44.1 for "mastering".
while it's in the Analog domain I usually do some compression and eq (if needed)

Great! Is there a big sound quality difference working at 48 instead of 44.1?

The difference is the difference between 20k and 22k in audio frequency response, depending on the low pass filters being used in the convertors.

Some but not much.

It's not a "big" diff. but it works rather well.
I record at 48k most of the time because alot of the time my projects get either dumped to 1" 2trk or a DAT that gets mastered by one of the gurus on either coast. they dump it into the analog domain anyway so...
then there are times when I have to output a particular project for broadcast use. and once again it sits at 48k.

is anyone using their tape machine as a "plugin" by sending audio to the unit and back into a PT aux or rec enabled audio track through the tape machine's monitor output?
This is something i was looking at doing if i can get my hands on an old 3 head unit - it seems practical because i would just be rewinding and recording over the same reel.

Mike, why the dump to tape, is it to pick up that "tape sound"?, reason i ask is because we track at 44.1k because all the mix guys we use out-of-house never want to convert from 48k to 44.1.

Would you recommend using a late Revox 1.4" Tape recorder with DBX noise reduction? (100 dB dynamic range) or it would ruine the sound and only a 1" is good?

the reason for tape is the sound.
no other reason than that.

as far as converting to 44.1...never in the digital domain have I heard it better than simply resampling it.

Yes, but the Revox solution is too low end or it's suitable for professional use?
