Default Listening Session - Home Studio Version #2

Ok all, this is the second edition of my listening session. Sorry for taking so long, been busy.

This session is of 6 different mics, with two different mic pre's (Presonus Digimax lt & Vintech 1272). The source is an acoustic guitar. Note that the guitar itself is nothing special and the performance isn't either. I had an unsuspecting volunteer, so we'll take what we could get. I used the digimax only because I was too lazy to pull my 002R out. Sorry, but I figured most peole on the board have or have heard the presonus. Besides, this is as much a mic comparison as it is a pre comparison.

Here's the scoop:

I placed all mics about 22 inches from the sound hole. I recorded with each mic once into the different pre's. No Eq or compression. I did add a little Dverb.

I would not even bother to use some of these scenarios to record an acoustic guitar, they were merely done for comparison purposes and to give you a point of reference that might be familiar. Hopefully this will give you an idea of the difference between each scenario. Obviously, varying the placement will yield different, possibly more favorable results in some instances. That said, here ya go:

sm 57 into presonus
sm 57 into vintech
nady scm1000 into presonus
nady scm1000 into vintech
sennheiser 609 into presonus
senn 609 into vintech
shure ksm 32 into presonus
ksm 32 into vintech
apex 435 into presonus
435 into vintech
RODE ntk into presonus
ntk into vintech

Post your thoughts.

THanks for posting this doyle.

The Vintech has so much nice colored bottom end and some shimmer on the highs.

The Digimax is a great clean preamp with no hype.

That nady into the 1272 sounds pretty good..as does the NTK into the vintech.

You can hear the tube on the ntk-> presonus.

I dont care what doc says... a few channels of NEVE and a digimax is a great combo for any situation.

BOY!... that NTK into the vintech sure sounds sweet! I think I'm gonna have to fork out the money for a vintech...

Also, Is that an original sm57 (i.e. sm57A and not the sm57B)? If so do you also have any sample of the B series with these pre-amps?

Thanks!

Also, which tube do you have in your NTK (JAN-Phillips or Sovtek)?

Thanks again!

But there was a change nonetheless which was drastic enough to change the series in the name of the mic so I'd like to hear the difference if any..

Also, I've heard and read that the original sm57 is superior to the sm57B, but I've never been able to find an original sm57 so I could never test that myself.. Still curious though..

there

have you even seen shure list a sm57b? no because there is no such thing
minor manufacturing changes mean a slightly different sound over the years, this is normal for any mic to a certain degree even my 57s which are of a similar age have a slightly different sound. but nothing major has changed and no series name change. you may be thinking of the the sm7b or the beta series, beta57a and beta58a are entirly different mics to the origional beta57 and beta58.

I have heard older SM57's are coveted for there sound. Is this possible? Is there a material differeance at all between the 1970's SM57 and now?

The SM57 has had no major changes over the years. There have been a host of minor improvements made since its introduction.

The dies and tools used to create the cartridge do wear out and they are custom made. As the old ones wear out, we have to custom make new dies and tools. This may account for any slight variation between older microphones and newer microphones.

You are probably thinking about the Shure SM7. There have been A and B revisions to that mic, SM7, SM7A, SM7B.
