It would be great to have this within Pro Tools, as other applications come and go.

You can make macros in Eucon and the new version has an improved pause command that will make them more reliable.
The new Eucon release looks great!

You cannot make macros in Pro Tools with the new keyboard shortcuts function. There is a new Pro Tools Search function which allows you to search for audio suite plugs and open them. It’s more typing than a single keyboard shortcut but the macro can be made easily with Keyboard Maestro, Eucon, or even Soundflow if you already subscribe.

I just installed Ultimate 22.4.
It works fine here with the only perceivable difference being the shortcuts window.
Unfortunately they have not allowed keyboard shortcut access to functions like Preview, which are still Eucon only.
Some other functions in the menus which previously didn't have shortcuts assigned can now be accessed.

This, terrible move.

Too bad I just decided to keep 2x HDX cards and grabbed the MTRX Studio, so switching to Reaper or Nuendo isn't that enticing (even though both still have areas where they outperform PT for cheaper or absurdly much cheaper).

Though, the MTRX Studio is a wonderful box and even the Hybrid/DSP Mode configuration does work really well (when the DLC isn't bugging on DSP Mode tracks) - I just wish I had a more modern way of connecting the IO to my computer.

(This latter part of my reply might be skewed by my 2022.4 HDX Firmware update hurdles...)

So the question I have is: it says your perpetual license will still allow you to use the program. I still have a year left on my updates and support on my perpetual license. If I download the update to Studio, which is says I am entitled to, will I not be able to use ProTools Studio after my year is up without buying a subscription, or will I always be stuck "in perpetuity" on PT 2021?

If you don't renew, you'll still be able to run whatever versions of Pro Tools (2021.12/earlier) or Pro Tools Studio (2022.4/later) that were released during your plan's term.

Pro Tools Studio is a renaming of what used to be Pro Tools - often referred to as standard or vanilla.

So, if I'm reading things correctly, only the $999/year subscription tier is compatible with HDX hardware? So if you have an HDX system, you have to get the most expensive subscription even if you have no use for half of the features in that version (for instance, you're just a simple music studio, no video or post)?

I have an older system and was resigned to someday having to do a full upgrade of software and hardware if my system has a major failure. Not going to do it if I have to pay a grand per year on top of all the other upgrade costs...if my system dies, I guess that's it for me with PT, after 20 years of using it...

What software version and hardware do you currently have?

Pro Tools Ultimate is still needed for HDX and HD Native hardware, same as before the changes yesterday. That can be a subscription (now included as part of the Pro Tools Flex bundle) or perpetual license. If you own a perpetual Pro Tools HD/Ultimate license with an expired Software Updates + Support Plan you should be able to upgrade that.

This is EXACTLY why I sold my HD Native card and Digi interfaces. Goodbye forever! My new Mac M1 Ultra Studio mac and PreSonus Quantum 4848 is all I'll ever need as I ween myself off of Pro Tools to Studio One. I'll keep my perpetual licenses in good standing just long enough until Avid comes up with M1 support and then say goodbye forever! I will never, ever buy Avid subscriptions or hardware. If you want to charge subscription prices, take a lesson from Slate, you NEED to have continued added value. Two new plugins and the ability to customize keyboard shortcuts ain't gonna cut it. Take a look at the new Nuendo release features, like night and day by comparison. Being the most expensive DAW software with the least innovation is a tragedy beyond words. Thanks for listening.
