Default SSD drive (system) or 8gb ram more?

Hi guys,

i'm on a mac pro (2008 / 3,1), lion and 6 gb ram.

i want to add more 8gb ram to get up to 14gb for a faster system (and some more power for vi instruments.)
but then i saw some threads about ssd drive as a system drive where the system worked much faster. better start up, faster session loading...

the price for 120 gb ssd or 8 gb ram it's the same.

what would you go for at first?

With PT10 able to load the whole mix into RAM, I'd save the money and get the RAM. It really speeds things up and no need for disk access, even really fast disk access.

Just to clarify, that's only with the HD software or regular PT10 w/CPTK.

Hi,

I think you are using an imac. I bought 16 g of ram at OWC for $100.00 recently much cheaper than an ssd.

Currently Ptx only accesses 3 g as it is 32 bit. The next version of pt is likely to be 64 bit and supposed to load your whole session into ram.

Why not buy the ram and save the money for the 64 bit version of PTs ?

With Pro Tools being a 32 bit application it can only access 3Gb RAM... BUT if you have Pro Tools HD or CPTK then you can use Ram Cache which is a 64Bit application which runs externally to Pro Tools and you can assign any Ram above the 3Gb needed for Pro Tools to cache the session.

Ram Cache makes the session being used super responsive.

An SSD boot drive will speed up boot and loading times of everything, my MBP boots in around 12 secs and once logged in Pro Tools loads in around 15 secs.

Hope this helps...

At first, thanks dougied for the advice of macsales!

i ordered (through amazon, because it was faster and same price range) the OWC Electra 120 GB 3G.

i did a clone with carbon copy cloner of my old hdd system drive and just a half hour later my ssd rocks my last pt-session in my mac pro.

no problems so far and its great. boot up feels more than two times faster. apps opining faster and session loading its much better too. the best thing is plug in load. before the ssd the audio stops for a moment when i insert heavy plugs when i have a bigger session. but know the plugs open up faster an without a break. the whole system "feels" better.

now i have the problem, that i need a second ssd for my macbook pro (2011). It has even more ram (8gb instead of 6 as my mac pro) but i feels a bit lame

If anybody is interested, i wrote a little review of my new drive setup at gearslutz (http://www.gearslutz.com/board/music...le-review.html)
