Default New build for PT11

Having recently upgraded to PT11, I am thinking it is time for a new build, as I'm having lots of problems on my 4+ year old computer

A couple of questions
(1) Could someone provide me with a link to successful builds for PT11
(2) Do most on here use a dedicated computer to run Pro Tools 11, or is it OK to share it with other programs (email, word processing, video conversion, Cantabile VST, adobe audition, band in box, and several others)

thanks for any help
Mal

Page one is a bit dated, but chock full of good info. The current king seems to be X79 motherboard/socket2011 i7 6 core with 32GB of quad-channel RAM. Socket 1150 looks promising but is too new to be sure. Socket 1155 works for some and not for others(I am in the "NOT" category).

Look at my signature for a good start. Just add to that a good case, power supply, CPU Cooler (my next build will use a liquid cooler), and a DVD drive.

Thanks for that Dave
And what are your opinions on part 2 of my question, re the advisability or not for a dedicated PT11 computer (for a small home studio) For financial reasons I'd rather just have the one computer, however stability in Pro Tools is a priority...

Mal777,

I have gone to using a dedicated computer for Pro Tools and anything that PT might use (Like Reason 7 and Sibelius). And, PT performance is better taking this route.

I use an older computer for e-mail, word processing, spreadsheeting, etc. In today's world even a really cheap new laptop would handle this kind of stuff with ease.

Another inexpensive solution would be to have a dual boot computer. You can do that with partitions or 2 hard drives. Obviously, PT on one and everything else on the other.

It really gets down to whether or not you can tolerate other programs competing for resources and compatibility with PT. When I used to use a single computer for everything I always worried that the next update of another program would break PT. Ninety percent of the time things were fine, but every once in a while I'd get a conflict.

Hope this helps,
Greg

Thanks for the tip Greg
I suppose another option that would minimize conflicts is to a selective startup under msconfig. That would ensure any non related programs to PT are not running in the background..
