Default getting PT to read a mp3 file w/o .mp3 in title

I want to make mp3 SFX files and I don't want to waste any of the characters I would have to describe the SFX with ".mp3". as part of the title. It seems PT will not read an mp3 file with out ".mp3" as part of the title. Is there a work- around for this? Or maybe I'm going about this all wrong. I've got a lot of SFX on CD. I want to get away from pulling what I need from CD. Any suggestions?

Pro Tools charges for mp3 import! After a free trial period you have to buy some whatever-it-is....but there are other ways.I'm on a Mac so I just convert the files with iTunes.(easy and free).I don't worry too much about the conversion since it's gonna be well....mp3.

You don't need to put MP3 in the filename , but if it's saved as an MP3 it must end in .MP3, or else the apps wouldn't be able to tell what it was.

All applications require the kind of file to end in it's respective file type. You can't open acrobat files without '.pdf' or word files without it's formats such as '.doc'. Your audio files end in '.wav' or '.aiff' and will not be recognized without them. You can't get around it with .mp3...

The Digi MP3 Option (about $19) allows you to import/convert MP3's directly into sessions to track or to regions lists and I find it to be a small price to pay for the convenience. The converter in the Digi MP3 codec is really a good one, too. My 2 senses.
