Default Odd and confusing error

PT 6.9.3 CS4
MAC G4 800
BUF Ct-4000 edit controller
Sync I/O
Machine Control 2.0

scenario:

PT with machine control in remote mode as a node on the Buf controller. PT set to record online at insert point.

edit start point at 1:00:00, time line start time at 58:15.

Buf controller given 1:00:00 edit in point.

start record sequence with Buf, instantly get a message from ProTools "edit point is before session start time, etc etc."

I have looked everywhere for some odd and hidden offset, dicked with just about every control I can...

The buf controller works with all of our tape decks, and was working with ProTools until this hiatus.

Not meaning to state the obvious but has a random pre-roll become activated in you transport window?
