Default G4 & 2940uw

I've been told this combo won't. Can someone explain why? Buying the G4 was a big expense. Don't want to have to pay more for another scsi card. Help please!

When the G4 came out, a lot of existing products didn't work with it. My guess is that this was the case, and Adaptec didn't want to put a lot into this card because they new that they would discontinue it to make room for the current 160 line.

Get the ATTO card.

Actually, it does work. I used it on my G4 for several months with no problems. You must have a specific firmware version (perhaps the latest?) on the card to use it - check it out on the Adaptec Site.

Digi doesn't support the card, but as I said, no problems here with it.

Enjoy

well the Adaptec 2940 uw and 2940u2w works fine here. REMEBER, when digi does not support something, it just means that they did not test it wich does not mean that it won't work...These cards had some problems with the G4 at the beginning but it has been resolved for a while now. I use them with 2 G4/400 one with Media 100 and the othe for ProTools Mix +...No problems.

Also remember that when someone on this list says it works for them, it may not work for *you*. Always take such reports with a grain of salt, or you might be disappointed (and have no recourse). When Digidesign tests something, they test it with a lot of different configurations. They also test at maximum tracks counts with dense data to be sure things hold up to spec.

That being said, since you already have the 2940, why don't you try it and see if it works for you. Give it the torture test with lots of tracks and lots of edits.

I would expect the problem with the 2940 would be generation of -6042 errors (PCI bus too busy). If you only use a single monitor, don't use an expansion chassis, limit your colors, don't run video, and run moderate track counts, you may not see this error.

BTW, the Atto card isn't remarkably expensive. It's under $300 from the major catalog companies.
