Default Pro Tools is playing audio from another clip in only one spot

I am encountering a really unusual issue with Pro Tools. I was recording a vocalist today and we went into a verse he sang to overdub a specific line in that verse in which he wanted to re-harmonize one specific word. I highlighted that word in the clip and hit command + E (on a mac) to separate that word in the clip. When I recorded him, I recorded over the entire line, not just that word. So the new clip more than covered that word. When I went to play back the audio I had just recorded the new take was there EXCEPT for the one problematic word. When I move the entire clip down to another track, it plays exactly how I would expect, with the newly harmonized word in place. But on the original track, for just that one word, it is playing the old harmony. But the waveform for the old harmony is no longer present.

An easy workaround would be to just create a new track and move the entire vocal take down to that. And I probably will do that here. But it seems like a really weird bug in the software, so I think it would be more prudent to understand it. I'm wondering if anyone can think of anything obvious that I am missing here.

There is some more backstory here -- I just upgraded to a Mac Studio M2 Max and this is the first session I'm running on the new computer. I'm using Pro Tools Studio 2023.6.0. The machine came with Sonoma 14.2 installed on it and I don't think I can revert back to any earlier OS on this machine, since I just got it. I know that Pro Tools isn't officially cleared for Sonoma yet, so I wonder if this bug could be specific to Sonoma? I used to work on a 2019 Macbook Pro running Catalina, which worked ok. I never encountered a bug like this on it.

Hi There!

Can you post a video/screenrecording of what have happened? I'm trying to reproduce this on my end but I'm unable to.

Thanks!

Did you happen to have a Melodyne plugin on the track insert and try to fix the problematic word before overdubbing?

originalscottyg -- you're brilliant. Of course it was something small like this that I overlooked. No Pro Tools bug, thank you!

I'm so glad I could help! As mentioned, this has probably gotten everybody at some point.
