Default XP Service Pack 3 - Should I?

I was wondering if I should get Service Pack 3 or not. Has any one had any experience with it yet?

I should mention I am still using PTMP 7.1, but any input is welcome.

Thanks

Is SP2 working well for you? If so, then leave it alone my lad. It did not work for me. It made my system unstable and I had to do a clean install.

Service Pack 3 is fully qualified by Digidesign. It's also working just fine for me.

As always; make a backup of your working system before installing any updates/upgrades. That way, if anything goes awry you can be back up and working again in 20 minutes or less. (much easier than having to do a full clean install )

I recommend (and very honestly swear by and couldn't live without) True Image by Acronis for backup purposes. It has saved my posterior more times than I can count.

http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=...cbb00e653a528d

"All M-Audio devices, drivers, and software have been qualified for use with Windows XP Service Pack 3; however not all driver installers are SP3 compatible."

Happened to me. I can't get my Bootcamp Windows XP to recognize my 2626, so I thought "how much worse can it get?" and installed SP3. And couldn't even run the installer / deinstaller

You should be fine if you already have your interface installed, though.

No, there is a big problem that a significant minority of machines are open to. The scope of the problem not yet known, but some machines endlessly reboot, at best, after installing SP3. Microsoft is currently offering free (!) customer service telephone support to help users in this position to recover. (when did that ever happen?) Urge everyone to wait on this one, understand if your machine is susceptible first, and be ready for the worst if you do try it. HP with the AMD chipset is ground zero but others are apparently vulnerable. This is evolving.

I have SP3 on three machines (2 Intel and 1 AMD) so far with no issues.

Link1

Link2

The reboot issue is not MS's or AMD's fault but HP's and their loss leader brand Compact. The problems stems from HP initially installing a operating system image that was made on a Intel based machine and applying it across the entire line.

I second SPK about having a good backup.

For those that dont want to connect to the internet SP3 is available as a downloadable ISO lthat only needs to be burned to a CD.

Long term I recommend upgrading to SP3 as we know that Digi's update are based on fully patched XP machines.

Thanks, I just happen to have a HP with an AMD processor and seems it was one of the systems affected. I have installed HP's Fix and then SP3 and all seems well.

HP have a fix up now? A link would be good! Any problems with the HP fix? MS just issued some sort of patch for this problem also-although this in not there fault.

At any rate I'm glad its working for you. Having a SP3 disc handy for fresh installs should save everybody a lot of time

Yes it's mentioned in the first article you posted, though now the link is dead here it is:

How to Fix:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...&product=89876

How to prevent:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...reg_R1002_USEN

I don't know if you can say it's entirely HP's fault. Sounds like even though XP is detecting a different processor, it's not making all the necessary changes.
