Oh god no. This is exactly what Apple/Logic did (everything had to be transcoded to an Apple Intermediary Codec.) It was crash-central not to mention just locking up the DAW while waiting to process.
This is NOT the way.

My point is that a video company should not expect users to need a third party app to convert their videos. Implementation aside.

It's a good point, and unfortunately ironic, with Avid being one of the preeminent video software companies in the business.

It seems, though, that this in-house development may actually be part of the problem. The ProTools side of Avid has put the video engine components of PT software in the laps of the video team, which makes great sense in theory, but it appears from the outside that the video team is only softly dancing with video-related PT code "as they're able to get to it."
