Default anyway to pass 96k through tdm?

I have a gig next month for nasa (yes, it actually IS rocket science) they want me to record the space shuttle launch at 24/96, then do a kickass surround mix for a film they are making. aquisition is not a problem but editing and mixing on my protools won't be possible. Is there anyway to use aux ins and the TDM mixer with 24/96 sources (instead of from the disk)? I doubt it, but I thought i'd ask.
so next question: does anyone know of a cheapish 24/96 surround mixing capable rig I could buy or rent? Layla, Motu, any of this low endy stuff that seems to have some high endy features? Appreciate any advice.

Although I have not tried to do this, it is in fact possible to record and edit (at least 2 track record and edit) 96k on protools. You will need a 96k converter AD/DA that supports the 2 wire standard such as the psx-100. Follow this link for the notes from apogee: http://www.apogeedigital.com/pdf/appnotes/appnote17.pdf

Good Luck!

By the way, MOTU Digital Performer will handle 96k so long as you are using one of their 96k I/O boxes. You should be able to ourchase one box and the software and do the mix. The price should be under $2000 for the basic setup.

... or just do everything 24/48k and convert up when finished. You might get better results than trying to use gear your not familiar with and a worse mixing environment. You could also just run some nice analogue gear on your 5.1 buss and record it at 96k after mixing at 48k...

my very opinionated $00.02!!!

thanks for the responses. i will look into the motu solution. The client is making a hi-def product and is being pretty freaky about 96k all the way through. i wouldn't want to try to slide anything by them, or admit that my hi-tech studio isn't up to the job. digi...take note

I agree with Otis. I would go with the bit-splitting option on an Apogee PSX-100.

Probably not a good idea to try and pull a fast one on Nasa

Wouldn't that mean you'd need a PSX100 for each pair of channels? Meaning 3 PSX100s for surround? (5.1) and using 2x the ammount of channels in PT, and not being able to use plug-ins at all????

BTW: Logic also does 96k, and I'd MUCH prefer that to DP.

In the past I've miced everything up like this (and had some great results):

- A PZM in the cockpit (left quite low in the mix with a ton of reverb)

- A 'direct in' feed from the control tower

- And, 3 M149s close miced under the rockets

Tom,
Try to convince NASA to let you record the sound with analog gear and transfer it to 24/96 later. You can easily rent the equipment and are sure to get the BEST results...

Maybe just ask Digi very nicely to get a 24/96 version of their hardware & software early.
