How to clone system drive?
Ok, here's the deal. My current startup drive (Snow Leopard) is having some problems. Pretty often, my Mac Pro just don't start from it, but from another drive (the original startup drive with Tiger). I have repaired the drive with DiskWarrior etc., and it should be ok, but I just can't trust it anymore. So I decided to buy a new drive with same size than my current startup drive. I put the new drive into Mac and then what? I wouldn't want to install everything (OS, Pro Tools, plug-ins and all) from scratch, that would take ages. Because I think software-wise my current startup drive is ok, would it be a bad idea to just clone it to the new fresh drive? And what would be the right method to do that?

Carbon Copy Cloner has never let me down. I trust it to make a faithful copy.

Re: How to clone system drive?
Thanks all! With CCC, is it necessary the new drive to be exactly the same size, or could it be larger than old drive?

In Super Duper it doesn't matter.

Re: How to clone system drive?
CCC doesn't care how large (or small) the drive is, as long as it is = or < than the source. It will wipe the WHOLE drive, so do your cloning BEFORE putting anything else on the drive. I am running 4 internal SATA drives, 1 system, 1 for video, and 2 audio drives. My video drive is also a CCC clone of my system drive, and my external FW drives can take over for video playback if necessary.
Make sure you are cloning a happy, stable system drive. Cloning a dodgy sys drive gives you 2 dodgy system drives. |
